“With over 25 years of running experience, I have been fortunate to train with elite athletes and learn from great coaches and medical physicians. As a sports science graduate, the combination of sports physiology, endurance running and sports medicine creates the motivation and fire to continue wanting to help others develop and achieve their own goals. It sounds very cliche to say this, but the most important ingredient for endurance success is consistency. Sometimes this is easier said than done in endurance training such is the nature and demands of the sport. Nevertheless, with structure, planning and routine this can be successfully achieved and goals accomplished. As Arthur Lydiard used to say, Train Smarter, Not Harder”
Running Background
My running career started at the age of 14 when I was asked to run in the school cross country team. My natural endurance ability and playing lots of football and basketball enabled success quickly and earned me my first-ever representative vest for Nottinghamshire. In the English Schools Cross Country Championships, I finished 32nd position out of 400 runners and there saw the start of my running career.
Throughout the age groups, I won County and Midland area titles, English School’s bronze 1500m and a silver medal at the AAA National 1500m title and was learning the art of racing and gaining valuable experience in training methods and principles.
At university, I was part of the silver-winning cross country team (Big Red Machine) and gained the qualifying time for the World Championship trials and the European U23 Championships, running my fastest 1500m time – 3.44.64. I was training with (at the time) top international athletes and training in different high-level groups, depending on where I was based at the time.
At the tender age of 45, the speed may have slowed but the engine is still going strong. I have run personal bests as a V40 age group over 5km, 10km, half marathon and ran a 2:32.04 marathon debut at 44 years old.
Do I think I can get faster? If you love what you do, anything is possible.
Coaching
As a Sports Science graduate, I have been using my degree to teach Physical Education for over 20 years. My passion for sport science, physiology, nutrition and sports kinesiology means that I never stop learning. I have a UESCA Run Coach qualification and a Lydiard Foundation Certificate Level II which combined with my degree, vast experience and extensive reading enables me to draw upon my skills and knowledge to support each person appropriately.
